Rosemaling
Through the art of rosemaling, a traditional Norwegian style of painting, I am able to visually share my heritage and keep this form of folk art alive. Through the laborious and technical style of painting my ancestors once did so easily, I am able to slow down and ponder back to the beginning of my creation. It can be easy to lose touch with the past in a world that is so rapidly changing, and it has become important for me to hold on to a tangible reminder of where I came from. Sadly this form of art has been forgotten and is not being done by today's generation. While working with the natural wood, my paint flows with the grain and I am reminded that this piece also has a past story and now is given a new narrative to share. I also hope that by sharing my heritage with the viewer, they will have time to stop and think about their own roots and heritage that maybe they also forgot about.
